The Carnivore Code Book Review

In my journey to address my autoimmune issues, I stumbled across Dr Paul Saladino on social media. His message resonated with me and reminded me of many concepts I followed when I originally explored the Paleo diet 10 years ago.

So, I immediately went to Audible and found The Carnivore Code was free to download if I took out a free trial with Audible. So, a few clicks later and I was off on an eight-month-long journey down the rabbit hole of nutritional science.

I originally listened to the book twice, and ten months later, I started the book again.

Why? Because I think Dr Saladino’s appreciation of the physiology and biochemistry involved in human health and his ability to present the information is exceptional. Whether he’s debating with leading scientists in the fields of longevity, nutrition, health care or fitness, his ability to explain and defend the science that underpins his message is second to none.

If you’ve not previously studied the science of nutrition and biochemistry, many of the terms and principles will be hard to understand fully. But you will understand their importance and how to implement Dr Saladino’s advice.

With further exposure to him and other like-minded experts, you’ll be able to revisit the book and gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of his work.

I feel it’s also important to point out that whether you’re a vegan or carnivore, Dr Saladino’s message is powerful and thought-provoking. His diet has evolved since the book was originally written. The terms animal-based, carnivore-ish or paleo-ish are probably a more accurate description of the diet he currently promotes and one that I follow. Still, the information and principles are the ones that underpin these diets.

And surprisingly, I find myself at the point of writing this post, feeling strongly that those who follow a vegan or plant-based diet should read this book to gain an appreciation of the information Dr Saladino presents. Not because they should stop their diet and go carnivore or start eating meat, but to empower them to refine their current diet to reduce the potentially negative effects of plant compounds and improve their gut health.

This is the approach that Dr Gundry takes in his book The Plant Paradox, he guides his readers to adapt their plant foods and oil intake rather than eliminate them. This is akin to a harm minimisation model, which is also taken in animal-based, carnivore-ish or paleo-ish diets. But to follow these diets, you first need to know what causes harm and, ideally, be fully empowered to make better nutritional choices consistently. And Dr Saladino, as I have already said, is second to none when presenting this information.
