The Cancer Code by Dr Jason Fung
The Cancer Code Book Review
I first came across The Cancer Code and the author Dr Jason Fung and his work as a nephrologist working with diabetic patients via a lecture he presented at the 2018 CrossFit Health Conference. His lecture was so well presented and supported by research that I included it on a nutrition resource list I produced, and is available on this website.
After reading several books which covered plant-based vs animal-based diets and the health benefits that could be achieved, which I had experienced myself as I was now back in the gym training hard and pain-free after experiencing several weeks of relenting arthritic knee pain, I was switching focus to longevity, and whether a further reduction in the risk of disease could be achieved through nutrition.
Naturally, the topic of cancer seemed obvious to explore, particularly as a close friend was at the time battling cancer herself, which sadly she lost eight days ago.
So, I started Dr Jason Fung’s book The Cancer Code, keen to learn more. The book tackles a hugely complex subject but keeps the content accessible for the most part. The book focuses on how cancer works and a theory linked to our evolution: how cells can regress back to prokaryote cells from our evolved eukaryote cells.
Whether people understand the book’s science, they can comprehend the message that needs to be taken away and considered when addressing nutrition and lifestyle. This message seems consistent when studying the latest science on nutrition and health; avoiding getting fat, controlling blood sugar and insulin sensitivity, and exercising, which are all linked.
If you want to understand more about how cancer works, I’d recommend the book. But if you’re hoping to be told definitive answers on how to cure cancer or prevent it. I don’t think any registered medical professional will put their career on the line and state what you should do outside of stay lean, exercise regularly, avoid ultra-processed food, processed sugar and high glycaemic foods.
Publishers Book Summary
Our understanding of cancer is slowly undergoing a revolution, allowing for the development of more effective treatments. For the first time ever, the death rate from cancer is showing a steady decline…but the ‘War on Cancer’ has hardly been won.
In The Cancer Code, Dr Jason Fung offers a revolutionary new understanding of this invasive, often fatal disease – what it is, how it manifests and why it is so challenging to treat. In this rousing narrative, Dr Fung identifies the medical community’s many missteps in cancer research – in particular, its focus on genetics, or what he terms the ‘seed’ of cancer, at the expense of examining the ‘soil,’ or the conditions under which cancer flourishes.
Dr Fung – whose ground-breaking work in treating obesity and diabetes has won him international acclaim – suggests that the dysregulation of insulin causes the primary disease pathway of cancer. In fact, obesity and type 2 diabetes significantly increase an individual’s risk of cancer.
In this accessible listen, Dr Fung provides a new paradigm for dealing with cancer, with recommendations for creating a hostile soil for this dangerous seed. One such strategy is intermittent fasting, which reduces blood glucose, lowering insulin levels. Another elimination intake of insulin-stimulating foods, such as sugar and refined carbohydrates.
For hundreds of years, cancer has been portrayed as a foreign invader we’ve been powerless to stop. We can begin taking back control by reshaping our view of cancer as an internal uprising of our healthy cells. The seed of cancer may exist in all of us, but the power to change the soil is in our hands.
